Spotter Mike Herman Jr. on His Motorsports Career

Jess Ballard:

“Racing America just launched Racer Jobs, which is a platform for folks who want to work in the racing industry to find opportunities. Tell us what your path has been like to get to this point.”

Alan Dietz:

“And Mike, we need the compact version of this because it could take a while.”

Mike Herman Jr.:

“Yeah, mine's like a book, I've been racing nonstop since 1983. Everybody knows my dad worked with Earnhardt from ‘76 to ‘86, heard all the stories from my go-kart racing and then my short track racing through late model stock car and the Hooters Pro Cup Series and then ended at Bowman Gray racing modifieds. And it just kind of was a natural progression for me.

“As far as new guys today, it's still really the same path. I mean, the spotter role, it's still evolving. So, a guy can still go short track racing, working with a local team to learn the trade and learn what it takes to be a spotter at the highest levels.

“And now you've got all the tools and resources to be able to hear and watch how I do things. You can listen to all my communications through the NASCAR app and there's audio, video, and there's so much that you can do to try to get yourself ready to do it. And there's a young group of guys now that they start out basically doing ARCA and second, third spotting, like this weekend coming up at Indy is a big weekend for the guys that are trying to make their way because they'll be the second and third spotters at the road courses here and Watkins Glen. And that's how get your path to getting to where I'm at.”
