Body Technician

General Summary: Reports to Body Install Manager. Builds and hangs race car bodies to specifications and template fit. Repairs race cars after races for return to rotation. Cleans and maintains fabrication shop.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

• Builds exterior body parts for race cars – hoods, deck lids, bumpers, noses, driver compartments, roofs, sides, rocker panels, etc.
• Hangs and fits exterior body parts to the race car. Shapes and trim body parts as needed.
• Builds and installs crush panels
• Squares and sets chassis and ride heights for race car bodies.
• Checks race car body measurements and adjusts as needed.
• Fabricates various parts as needed.
• Fits and welds bumper bars, tabs, package trays, etc.
• Removes body panels from crashed race cars and repairs damaged body parts.
• Works on special projects (911’s) as needed.
• Cleans and maintains fabrication shop area and tools.
• Assumes any responsibilities delegated by the Body Hanging Manager.

Education and Work Experience:

High school education or equivalent required. Typically requires 3 to 5 years of welding and fabrication experience, with some experience in a race shop environment. Welding Certification preferred, but not required.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

Ability to fabricate sheet metal parts such as crush panels, interior sheet, fillers. Knowledgeable in the use of all sheet metal and fabrication equipment. Proven ability to weld in all horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions with MIG welders. Proven metal grinding and shaping skills. Basic knowledge of race cars Strong oral communication, teamwork, and people skills.

Equipment and Applications:

Welding tools, cutting tools, grinders, drills, drill press, saw, break, shear, bead roller, basic hand tools, and safety equipment.

Work Environment Physical Demands:

Frequent bending, squatting, working on knees, standing on concrete for long periods, and getting up and down. Able to lift and carry up to 70 pounds. Manual dexterity and coordination. Able to stay calm and focused in stressful situations while balancing tight deadlines. The work environment includes sparks, dust, noise, welding equipment, cutting tools, and power tools.
