Steering Rack Technician

Reports To: Steering Rack Department Supervisor or Designated Vehicle Systems Manager

Position Overview:

Joe Gibbs Racing is seeking a mechanically skilled and detail-oriented Steering Rack Technician to support our NASCAR Next Gen competition program. This position is responsible for inspecting, servicing, preparing, testing, documenting, and delivering race-ready steering rack assemblies and related steering-system components. The technician will work closely with engineering, vehicle assembly, road crews, and quality-control personnel to ensure every component meets JGR specifications, manufacturer requirements, NASCAR regulations, and established department procedures.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Inspect, service, maintain, and prepare NASCAR Next Gen steering rack assemblies.
• Disassemble, clean, inspect, measure, and reassemble approved serviceable components.
• Identify wear, damage, contamination, leakage, binding, free play, or other abnormal conditions.
• Perform required functional, movement, pressure, and leak testing.
• Verify component dimensions, clearances, operating characteristics, and overall condition.
• Complete scheduled maintenance based on mileage, event history, and required service intervals.
• Maintain accurate component records, service histories, inspection results, and life-cycle information.
• Prepare race-ready primary and spare components for competition and testing.
• Support steering-system installation, removal, inspection, and troubleshooting.
• Maintain organized component inventories and assist with parts forecasting.
• Keep tools, fixtures, measuring instruments, and test equipment clean and properly calibrated.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe precision-component work area.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with experience working on automotive, racing, hydraulic, steering, suspension, drivetrain, or similar precision mechanical systems.
• Ability to recognize abnormal component wear, movement, leakage, or operation.
• Experience using torque wrenches, calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, gauges, and other precision tools.
• Ability to follow detailed engineering specifications, service procedures, build sheets, and inspection checklists.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to consistent, repeatable work.
• Intermediate computer skills and the ability to maintain electronic service and inventory records.
• Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
• Ability to work independently and take responsibility for completed work.
• Willingness to work extended hours, evenings, weekends, or adjusted schedules when required by production and racing demands.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Previous experience in NASCAR, professional motorsports, high-performance automotive work, aerospace, hydraulic-system service, or precision component assembly.
• Experience servicing rack-and-pinion steering systems.
• Familiarity with hydraulic or electro-hydraulic steering-system operation.
• Knowledge of race-car suspension, steering geometry, vehicle setup, and steering-system installation.
• Experience reading engineering drawings, technical specifications, and inspection reports.
• Experience with component traceability and life-cycle management.

Required Qualifications:

This position operates primarily in a professional motorsports shop and precision-component service environment. The role requires strict cleanliness, careful component handling, accurate documentation, confidentiality, and the ability to consistently meet changing production and competition deadlines.
