Indy NXT Technical Manager
Job Details
Description
Work Location:
Indianapolis, IN
Department:
Technical Inspection
Employment Type:
Seasonal | Non-Exempt
Reports To:
Technical Director, INDYCAR Officiating, Inc.
If you've spent years building, prepping, and running race cars at a professional level, this seasonal opportunity puts that experience to work on the officiating side of the sport—leading technical inspection for Indy NXT.
As Technical Manager, Indy NXT, you'll oversee the inspection of the series' Dallara IL-15 race cars and help enforce the technical regulations that keep competition fair, safe, and consistent. This is hands-on, detail-driven work for someone who understands race cars from the ground up and can confidently lead a technical inspection team at the track. This isn't an engineering role or a desk job—it's an opportunity to shape the future of open-wheel racing.
About INDYCAR Officiating
INDYCAR Officiating, Inc. (IOI) is an independent, not-for-profit organization established in December 2025 to oversee officiating for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES and INDY NXT, including race control, technical inspection, and rules enforcement. Operating independently of the series and its ownership, IOI is committed to ensuring racing is governed fairly, consistently, and with the highest standards of integrity.
INDY NXT is INDYCAR's premier development series, featuring a one-make field built around the Dallara IL-15 chassis and AER turbocharged engine. Because every competitor races the same equipment, technical inspection is focused on ensuring every car conforms to identical specifications. As Technical Manager, you'll lead that effort while directing the technical inspection team throughout the season.
The Impact You’ll Make
Every Indy NXT event depends on every competitor racing under the same technical standards. As Technical Manager, you'll lead the technical inspection program that ensures every car meets the rulebook, creating a fair and competitive environment while helping develop the next generation of INDYCAR drivers.
What You’ll Own
- Lead the technical inspection team. Direct and coordinate the technical inspection crew while overseeing inspections throughout every Indy NXT event.
- Inspect race cars. Conduct detailed technical inspections of Dallara IL-15 race cars to verify compliance with the Indy NXT rulebook.
- Evaluate vehicle systems. Apply hands-on mechanical knowledge of the chassis, AER turbocharged engine, gearbox, suspension, and aerodynamics during inspections.
- Verify control components. Confirm spec parts, sealed assemblies, and safety components conform to Indy NXT specifications.
- Measure with precision. Operate precision measurement tools to verify vehicle legality.
- Apply and enforce regulations. Interpret and enforce technical regulations while supporting sanctioning procedures.
- Maintain inspection equipment. Service, calibrate, repair and prepare technical inspection equipment during the off-season
- Improve processes. Maintain technical documentation, records, and databases while identifying opportunities to improve inspection procedures.
- Support the team. Take on additional responsibilities and special projects as needed to support race operations and the continued success of INDYCAR Officiating.
What Makes You Successful
- Hands-on experience. Five (5) or more years preparing and running race cars at a professional level—as a Chief Mechanic, Car Chief, Crew Chief, Senior Mechanic, or in a comparable role. Experience in Indy NXT, Indy Lights, or similar open-wheel competition is a plus.
- Leadership. Proven ability to lead and coordinate a technical inspection or mechanical team during race events.
- Mechanical knowledge. A thorough understanding of spec race car systems, including chassis, turbocharged engines, gearboxes, suspension, and aerodynamics, built through hands-on experience.
- Measurement tools. Experience using precision measurement equipment and inspection tools
- Attention to detail. Consistent, thorough, and accurate across every inspection.
- Composure. Able to stay focused, adaptable, and level-headed through long, fast-paced race weekends while making fair, confident decisions.
- Travel. Ability to travel to every INDY NXT event throughout the season, with occasional shop-based work during the off-season.
- Administration. Maintain accurate records, technical documentation, inspection checklists, and databases.
- Software. Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, with the ability to quickly learn new systems.
- Education. A specific degree isn't required. Trade school training or motorsports technical certifications are valued, but extensive hands-on professional racing experience is what matters most.
What to Expect
This is a seasonal position requiring travel to every INDY NXT event throughout the racing season, with some shop-based work during the off-season. Flexibility and adaptability are essential, as race weekends often involve long days, changing priorities, and working in a fast-paced environment.
You'll spend significant time on your feet, assist with moving, loading, and operating technical inspection equipment, and work around active race operations where safety, awareness, and professionalism are essential. While much of the off-season work is based in our Indianapolis shop, race weekends place you in active paddocks where situational awareness and attention to detail are critical.
Why You’ll Love Working Here
This is more than a seasonal assignment—it's an opportunity to lead technical inspection in INDY NXT while helping shape the next generation of INDYCAR drivers, teams, and race engineers.
You'll enjoy:
- Competitive seasonal compensation
- Travel expenses covered
- Travel days compensated
- The opportunity to work alongside experienced INDYCAR officials
- The chance to help uphold the integrity of one of the world's premier open-wheel development series
Every race weekend, your expertise will directly contribute to fair, safe, and competitive racing
