Indianapolis, IN, USA Full Time

Job Details

Description

Work Location:
Indianapolis, IN

Department:
Technical Inspection

Employment Type:
Full – Time | Exempt

Reports To:
Technical Director, INDYCAR Officiating, Inc.

If you've spent years building race cars, chasing thousandths of a second, and solving problems before anyone else sees them, this isn't just another job, it's an opportunity to help protect the integrity of the highest level of open-wheel racing in North America.

As Technical Manager, you'll inspect race cars and help enforce the technical regulations that keep the NTT INDYCAR SERIES competitive, safe, and fair. It's hands-on, detail-driven work for someone who knows race cars from the ground up. This isn't an engineering role or a desk job—it's an opportunity to use your racing experience in an entirely new way.

About INDYCAR Officiating

INDYCAR Officiating, Inc. (IOI) is an independent, not-for-profit organization established in December 2025 to oversee officiating for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES and INDY NXT, including race control, technical inspection, and rules enforcement. Operating independently of the series and its ownership, IOI is committed to ensuring racing is governed fairly, consistently, and with the highest standards of integrity.

We're looking for professionals who understand race cars because they've built them, prepared them, and competed with them.

The Impact You’ll Make

Every race begins with confidence that every competitor is competing under the same technical standards. As Technical Manager, you'll help uphold the integrity of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES by ensuring every car complies with the rulebook, creating a level playing field while contributing to the safety and fairness of competition.

What You’ll Own

  • Inspect race cars. Conduct detailed technical inspections to verify compliance with the INDYCAR rulebook and maintain competitive equality.
  • Evaluate vehicle systems. Apply hands-on mechanical knowledge of chassis, engines, gearboxes, suspension, and aerodynamics during inspections.
  • Measure with precision. Operate car-scanning equipment and precision measurement tools to verify vehicle legality.
  • Apply and enforce regulations. Assist with the development, interpretation, and enforcement of technical policies, specifications, qualifications, and sanctioning procedures.
  • Maintain inspection equipment. Service, calibrate, and repair technical inspection equipment during the off-season.
  • Improve processes. Maintain technical documentation, records, and databases while identifying opportunities to improve inspection procedures.
  • Support the team. Contribute wherever needed to support race operations, continuous improvement initiatives, and the ongoing success of INDYCAR Officiating.

What Makes You Successful

  • Hands-on experience. Five (5) or more years preparing and running race cars at a professional level—as a Chief Mechanic, Car Chief, Crew Chief, Senior Mechanic, or in a comparable role.
  • Mechanical knowledge. A thorough understanding of race car systems—including chassis, engine, gearbox, suspension, and aerodynamics—built through hands-on experience.
  • Measurement tools. Experience using car-scanning technology and precision measurement tools.
  • Attention to detail. Consistent, thorough, and accurate across every inspection.
  • Able to stay focused, adaptable, and level-headed through long, fast-paced race weekends.
  • Team leadership. This role has no direct reports but requires the ability to direct and guide technical inspection staff during race events.
  • Communication. Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to clearly explain technical findings, provide direction to technical inspection staff, and interact professionally with officials, competitors, and team personnel.
  • Administration. Maintain accurate inspection records, technical documentation, checklists, databases, and related technical reports.
  • Software. Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, with the ability to quickly learn new systems.
  • Education. A specific degree isn't required. Trade school training or motorsports technical certifications are valued, but extensive hands-on professional experience is what matters most.

What to Expect

This role travels to every event on the NTT INDYCAR SERIES schedule, with occasional additional travel throughout the year. Flexibility and adaptability are essential, as race weekends often involve long days, changing priorities, and working in a fast-paced environment.

You'll spend significant time on your feet, assist with moving, loading, and unloading technical inspection equipment, and operate specialized equipment both at the track and in the shop.

While the off-season is primarily based in our Indianapolis office and shop, race weekends place you in active paddocks and pit areas where race cars are operating in close proximity. You'll work around high noise levels, changing weather conditions, and dynamic event environments where situational awareness and safety are always top priorities.

Why You’ll Love Working Here

Full-time employees receive a competitive benefits package, including:

  • Medical (with tax-advantaged Health Savings Account), Dental, and Vision
  • 401(k) with 100% company match up to 5%
  • Paid Vacation, Personal & Sick Days, and 10 Paid Holidays
