Race Simulation Development Engineer – NASCAR Cup Series

Location: Welcome, NC

Team: Kaulig Racing – NASCAR Cup Series

Position Type: Full-Time

Travel Required: Minimal (occasional track or testing support as needed)

About Kaulig Racing

Kaulig Racing is a championship-caliber organization competing full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series and (starting 2026) the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Founded by owner Matt Kaulig and led by President Chris Rice, we are committed to growth, innovation, and providing our people with the tools and support to compete at the highest level. We value hard work, collaboration, and a winning culture in a family-oriented environment.

Role Overview

The Race Simulation Development Engineer is a development-focused role centered on designing, building, and enhancing custom simulation software, tools, and high-fidelity models for our NASCAR Cup Series program. This shop-based position emphasizes software engineering and advanced modeling to create solutions for vehicle dynamics, tire performance, aerodynamics, and race strategy. You’ll collaborate closely with race engineers and the Driver-in-the-Loop team to develop tools that deliver measurable competitive advantages.

Candidates with Formula SAE / Formula Student experience are strongly preferred—the hands-on modeling, software development, vehicle dynamics, and team problem-solving skills from FSAE align perfectly with this role. This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented engineer to own significant technical development work in a growing NASCAR organization.

Key Responsibilities

Design and develop high-fidelity vehicle and lap-time simulation models/tools, integrating diverse data sources (3D scans, ROMER arm, kinematic data, aero maps, tire testing).

Build and refine advanced tire models, including wear characteristics, temperature sensitivity, and track-specific performance prediction.

Develop aero modeling tools and workflows that incorporate wind tunnel, CFD, and on-track data into full-vehicle simulation environments.

Create and validate subsystem models (suspension, chassis, etc.) and integrate them into complete vehicle assemblies.

Develop internal software tools, scripts, and automation for data processing, model updates, simulation workflows, timing/scoring, strategy, and fuel mileage optimization.

Perform model correlation studies, sensitivity analyses, and continuous improvement based on real-world data.

Collaborate with the DiL team to design and prepare vehicle models/tools for sessions, then incorporate feedback into ongoing development.

Produce technical documentation, reports, user guides, and supporting materials for new tools and models.

Drive innovation in simulation capabilities while learning from and mentoring within the engineering team.

Qualifications & Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Vehicle Dynamics, Applied Mathematics, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.

0–3 years of experience in simulation software development, vehicle dynamics modeling, or related engineering roles. Strong Formula SAE / Formula Student project experience (modeling, software tools, dynamics, tire/aero) is highly valued.

Proficient in programming and software development (Python, MATLAB/Simulink, C++, or similar).

Experience designing and building simulation models, tools, or custom software for motorsports/automotive applications.

Solid knowledge of tire modeling, aerodynamic modeling, multi-body dynamics, and lap-time simulation principles.

Familiarity with simulation environments (MoTeC, rFpro, etc.) and data analysis tools.

Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative setting.

Willingness to work non-traditional hours during peak periods and occasional travel. Must live in or relocate to the greater Charlotte / Winston-Salem, NC area.

What We Offer

Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.

Hands-on opportunity to design and build cutting-edge simulation tools in a professional NASCAR Cup Series environment.

Mentorship from experienced engineers and clear pathways for technical growth and career advancement.

Collaborative, high-energy, family-oriented team in our expanding organization.
