Mechanic, NASCAR Next Gen

Statesville, NC, USA Full Time

The Next Gen Mechanic is responsible for the assembly, inspection, and maintenance of NASCAR Cup Series Next Gen (Gen‑7) race cars. This role focuses on precise installation and service of spec systems—transaxle, independent rear suspension, center‑lock wheel/hub, brakes, steering, fuel, cooling—as well as at‑track reliability, rapid repairs, and compliance with the NASCAR rulebook. The mechanic collaborates closely with engineering, fabrication, body/scan, and car chief/crew chief to deliver competitive, safe, and inspection‑ready cars on time.

Key Responsibilities

Car Assembly & Systems Service (Next Gen Platform)

  • Build, install, and service:
    • Spec transaxle & drivetrain (mounting, alignment, fluids, shifter linkage, driveline angles).
    • Independent rear suspension (control arms, toe links, bearings, alignment checks).
    • Front suspension/steering (rack, tie rods, uprights, geometry verification).
    • Brake systems (rotors, calipers, pads, lines, bias, bleed procedures).
    • Center‑lock hub & wheel system (proper torque, retention, thread and nut condition).
    • Fuel, cooling, and oil systems (hoses, dry‑breaks, pumps, radiators, shrouds, leak checks).
    • Electrical/loom routing (sensors, harnesses, connectors; basic diagnostics).
  • Execute setup changes: springs, dampers, bars, shims, ride heights, camber/caster/toe, bump steer checks.
  • Perform nut‑and‑bolt checks with documented torque sequences and build sheets.

Inspection & Compliance

  • Follow current NASCAR Cup Next Gen rules and procedures for car build, safety equipment, and body/systems clearances.
  • Support body scan/inspection prep (panel fasteners, clearances, diffuser/splitter fit, seal integrity).
  • Maintain accurate records: build logs, torque logs, mileage on assemblies, and service intervals.

Reliability, Quality & Problem Solving

  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical issues quickly—both in the shop and at track.
  • Identify wear/failure trends; propose preventive actions and parts rotation plans.
  • Work closely with engineers on data-informed checks (temps, pressures, pad wear, tire/wheel inspection).

Shop Standards & Safety

  • Maintain clean, organized work bays; label, torque‑stripe, and document critical fasteners.
  • Adhere to EHS standards: PPE for chemicals/welding/grinding; safe use of lifts and cranes.
  • Assist inventory with spec component tracking and lifecycle management.

Qualifications

Required

  • Proven hands‑on expertise with race suspensions, brakes, driveline, and steering.
  • Proficiency with precision tools: torque wrenches, digital angle gauges, dial indicators, bump‑steer/ride height/camber/caster tools.
  • Ability to read build sheets, setup sheets, and basic engineering drawings.
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and failure‑analysis skills.
  • Able to lift 50+ lbs, stand for extended periods, and work overtime/travel as needed.

Preferred

  • Direct Next Gen Cup experience (car assembly or at‑track).
  • Experience with center‑lock wheel systems and high‑temp brake systems.
  • Familiarity with composite body attachment and diffuser/splitter interfaces.
  • Basic electrical diagnostics and sensor/harness service.
  • CDL, forklift, or pit equipment experience (desirable but not required).

Key Competencies

  • Detail‑driven, process‑oriented craftsmanship
  • Speed with precision under pressure
  • Clear communication supervisors
  • Accountability and documentation discipline
  • Team‑first attitude and professionalism
  • Adaptability to rule or spec changes

Work Environment

  • Race shop with lifts, presses, fabrication tools, brake lathes, and fluids/chemicals.
  • Weekend and extended hours common during season.
  • Safety‑sensitive, time‑critical environment.
  • Ability to handle physically demanding work, including lifting 50+ lbs and long periods of standing.
