Job Posting: Shop Driver-in-the-Loop Engineer – NASCAR Cup Series

Location: Welcome, NC Team: Kaulig Racing – NASCAR Cup Series Position Type: Full-Time Travel Required: Minimal (occasional track or testing support as needed)

About Kaulig Racing Kaulig Racing is a championship-caliber organization competing full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series and (starting 2026) the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Founded by owner Matt Kaulig and led by president Chris Rice, we are committed to growth, innovation, and giving our people the tools and support to compete at the highest level. We value hard work, collaboration, and a winning culture while maintaining a family-oriented environment.

Role Overview The Shop Driver-in-the-Loop Engineer is an entry-level position ideal for a motivated engineer looking to launch a career in professional motorsports simulation and driver development. This shop-based role focuses on preparing, running, and supporting Driver-in-the-Loop (DiL) sessions to help optimize vehicle setups, driver performance, and race weekend readiness. You will work closely with race engineers, simulation engineers, and drivers to create accurate models, execute test plans, capture feedback, and translate DiL learnings into real-world car performance improvements.

Candidates with Formula SAE / Formula Student experience are strongly preferred, as the hands-on vehicle dynamics, testing, data analysis, and team-based problem-solving skills gained in FSAE align closely with the demands of this role. This is a fantastic opportunity for a detail-oriented recent graduate or early-career professional with relevant project experience to gain significant technical ownership in a growing NASCAR organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain high-fidelity vehicle models for Driver-in-the-Loop sessions using the latest simulation data, measurement files, and correlation updates.
  • Develop test plans and setup matrices for DiL sessions focused on vehicle setup optimization, tire behavior, aero balance, and driver feedback.
  • Run DiL simulator sessions, record detailed driver comments, and analyze session data to identify performance gains.
  • Translate driver feedback and DiL results into actionable recommendations for race weekend setups and simulation model improvements.
  • Collaborate closely with the simulation team to ensure models used in the DiL are accurately correlated with track data.
  • Support real-time troubleshooting and technical setup of the DiL hardware and software during sessions.
  • Produce clear pre-event DiL preparation packages and post-session reports with key findings and setup suggestions.
  • Assist with the integration of new tire models, aero maps, and subsystem updates into the DiL environment.
  • Help develop and improve processes, scripts, and tools to increase efficiency and repeatability of DiL workflows.
  • Provide occasional on-site support during track testing to help correlate DiL results with real-world performance.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Vehicle Dynamics, or a related discipline (Master’s degree a plus).
  • 0–3 years of professional motorsports experience (internships, co-ops, or similar hands-on projects strongly considered). Formula SAE / Formula Student experience is strongly preferred.
  • Solid understanding of vehicle dynamics, lap-time simulation, and Driver-in-the-Loop principles.
  • Familiarity with simulation and DiL software tools (experience with rFpro, MoTeC, MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or similar platforms is highly desirable).
  • Experience or strong interest in running simulator sessions, capturing driver feedback, and translating it into engineering actions.
  • Proficiency with data analysis and scripting tools (MATLAB, Python, or similar).
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, especially when working directly with drivers and engineers.
  • Willingness to work non-traditional hours during peak development periods and occasional travel for testing or correlation events.
  • Must live in or be willing to relocate to the greater Charlotte / Winston-Salem, NC area.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package
  • Hands-on experience with professional Driver-in-the-Loop systems in a NASCAR Cup Series environment
  • Mentorship from experienced engineers and a clear path for technical growth and career advancement
  • Collaborative, high-energy, family-oriented team environment in our expanding organization
