About Kaulig Racing Kaulig Racing is a championship-caliber organization competing full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series and (starting 2026) the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Founded by owner Matt Kaulig and led by president Chris Rice, we are committed to growth, innovation, and giving our people the tools and support to compete at the highest level. We value hard work, collaboration, and a winning culture while maintaining a family-oriented environment.
Role Overview The Simulation Summer Intern will support the development of advanced simulation tools and software that directly empower our race engineers. This technical role focuses on building simulation utilities, creating user-friendly front-end interfaces, processing large datasets, and ensuring accurate digital models through metrology scanning. It is an excellent opportunity for a motivated student with strong programming and analytical skills who wants to bridge software development with real-world race car performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and improve simulation tools and scripts to support race engineers in setup optimization, lap-time prediction, and performance analysis.
- Create intuitive front-end software interfaces and dashboards for simulation workflows and data visualization.
- Perform data processing, cleaning, and analysis on large engineering datasets from track, simulation, and DiL sessions.
- Work with metrology equipment (ROMER arms and Creaform scanners) to measure race car components and accurately model them for simulation input.
- Assist with maintaining and correlating simulation models using real-world measurement data and vehicle files.
- Support pre- and post-event simulation activities and contribute to engineering reports and tool documentation.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or a related discipline (rising junior or senior preferred).
- Strong programming skills in Python (preferred) or similar languages; experience with MATLAB/Simulink is a plus.
- Familiarity with software development, front-end frameworks, or GUI creation for dashboards and interfaces.
- Experience or coursework in data processing, analysis, and basic AI/ML concepts.
- Hands-on exposure to CAD software and interest in 3D scanning/metrology for accurate component modeling.
- Solid understanding of vehicle dynamics, simulation principles, or motorsports data is highly valued.
- Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
- Passion for motorsports and desire to develop tools that impact professional NASCAR race performance.
- Must live in or be willing to relocate to the greater Charlotte / Winston-Salem, NC area for the duration of the internship.
- Prefer candidates with experience in Formula SAE.
What We Offer
- Competitive hourly pay and comprehensive internship benefits
- Hands-on experience developing simulation tools, front-end software, and data pipelines in a professional NASCAR environment
- Direct mentorship from experienced race and simulation engineers
- Opportunity to see your tools and models used by the Cup Series engineering team
