Kaulig Racing

Secondary Race Engineer – NASCAR Cup Series

Welcome, NC, USA Full Time

Kaulig Racing is a championship-caliber organization competing full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series and (starting 2026) the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Founded by owner Matt Kaulig and led by president Chris Rice, we are committed to growth, innovation, and giving our people the tools and support to compete at the highest level. We value hard work, collaboration, and a winning culture while maintaining a family-oriented environment.

Role Overview

The Secondary Race Engineer is the technical cornerstone for one of our Cup Series entries. This high-autonomy role blends advanced simulation and DiL work, database ownership, race strategy, dash programming, and hands-on trackside IT/intercom support. It is ideal for a versatile, detail-obsessed engineer who thrives on owning multiple critical systems and wants a direct path to Lead Race Engineer or senior leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain highly correlated baseline simulation models using the latest vehicle measurement files (3d measurement scans, ROMER measurement files, aero maps, tire data) so the primary engineering staff always works from the most accurate representation of our cars.
  • Fully own Driver-in-the-Loop (DiL) preparation: create models and setup matrices, develop test plans, run sessions, record driver feedback, analyze data, and translate learnings into weekend setups.
  • Own the team’s master setup/run database — every change, note, photo, measurement, and historical reference — with real-time documentation and distribution to crew chiefs, shop personnel, and management.
  • Provide live race strategy support with accurate fuel-mileage calculations, pit-window analysis, stage-break planning, and caution/tire trade-off recommendations.
  • Program the McLaren PCU-500N digital dash weekly (layouts, math channels, alarms, fuel logic) and analyze each track’s pit-road speed limits for optimal driver dashboards.
  • Assist the trackside IT specialist: set up practice carts and pit boxes. Perform rapid troubleshooting of intercom systems, wiring, and electronics under race pressure.
  • Produce detailed pre-event preparation packages (simulation data + DiL recommendations) and comprehensive post-event reports with correlation updates.
  • Serve as backup Lead Race Engineer when required.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Automotive Engineering, Vehicle Dynamics, or related discipline.
  • 3–5+ years of professional motorsports engineering experience (NASCAR Cup, Xfinity, or Trucks strongly preferred).
  • Expert-level proficiency with MoTeC i2 Pro.
  • Proven hands-on experience building, validating, and correlating lap-time simulation models and preparing/running Driver-in-the-Loop sessions.
  • Demonstrated ownership of a professional race team’s setup database and real-time change documentation process.
  • Direct experience programming and troubleshooting the McLaren PCU-500N digital dash in competition.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask calmly under extreme time pressure.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively and work long, non-traditional hours (weekends, holidays, overnight).
  • Must live in or be willing to relocate to the greater Charlotte / Winston-Salem, NC area.

  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package
  • Opportunity to work with top-tier Cup Series drivers and personnel
  • Significant technical ownership with a clear, accelerated career path in a growing organization
